FDR's Daring Gamble: How the Three-Days Series of Tehran, Cairo, and Yalta Shaped the Course of World War II
In November 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt embarked on a daring gamble that would shape the course of World War II. He traveled to Tehran, Cairo, and Yalta to meet with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin, the leaders of Great Britain and the Soviet Union, respectively. These three meetings, known as the Three-Days Series, were critical in forging the Allied alliance and laying the groundwork for the postwar world.

## The Tehran Conference
The Tehran Conference was the first of the Three-Days Series. It was held from November 28 to December 1, 1943, in the Iranian capital of Tehran. The three leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including the upcoming invasion of Normandy, the opening of a second front in Europe against Nazi Germany, and the postwar settlement.
One of the most important outcomes of the Tehran Conference was the agreement to open a second front in Europe. This was a major concession on the part of Stalin, who had been reluctant to commit Soviet troops to an invasion of Western Europe. However, Roosevelt and Churchill were able to convince him that a second front was necessary to relieve the pressure on the Soviet Union and to hasten the defeat of Germany.
## The Cairo Conference
The Cairo Conference was the second of the Three-Days Series. It was held from November 22 to 26, 1943, in the Egyptian capital of Cairo. The three leaders met to discuss the war in the Pacific and the postwar settlement in Asia.
One of the most important outcomes of the Cairo Conference was the agreement to establish a postwar international organization to maintain peace and security. This organization would eventually become the United Nations.
## The Yalta Conference
The Yalta Conference was the third and final meeting of the Three-Days Series. It was held from February 4 to 11, 1945, in the Crimean city of Yalta. The three leaders met to discuss the final stages of the war in Europe and the postwar settlement.
One of the most controversial outcomes of the Yalta Conference was the agreement to divide Germany into four occupation zones after the war. This agreement would later lead to the division of Germany into East and West Germany.
## The Legacy of the Three-Days Series
The Three-Days Series of Tehran, Cairo, and Yalta was a critical turning point in World War II. The meetings forged the Allied alliance and laid the groundwork for the postwar world. However, the legacy of these meetings is complex and contested. Some historians argue that the agreements reached at Yalta were a betrayal of the Soviet Union and led to the Cold War. Others argue that the agreements were necessary to secure a lasting peace after the war.
Regardless of one's interpretation of the legacy of the Three-Days Series, there is no doubt that these meetings were a watershed moment in world history. They shaped the course of World War II and laid the foundation for the postwar world.
